What's Cooking in Microwave Cookware

The short answer is just about anything these days! As the technology has evolved, manufacturers have rallied to the cause and we have more options these days in our choice of microwave cookware.

The microwave oven deserves a monument somewhere. It has made fast food service a household name. Now we don't even have to drive to the so-called golden arches to have a fast fix when we are hungry.

I do realize, however, this is usually not referred to as home cooking; however, single, working people who simply do not have the time or the desire to make things 'from scratch', love these little appliances!

Some facts that will surprise you about microwave cookware. Did you know some metals can be used in a microwave oven? I will tell you the circumstances, but first let me say I don't care. I am going to pretend I don't know this. I will stick with plastic microwave cookware just to be sure.

If you have ever had the misfortune to accidentally put something metal in a microwave, heard the crack of lightening and seen the electrical arc, it was horrifying. You would never want for it even to be possible to go there again, even for the sake of convenience. That the microwave is still working and the fuses are still intact is reassuring, however, who knows what tomorrow may bring, so I would just as soon forgo metals in the microwave, thank you.

Aluminum foil can be used for shielding, small metal skewers will be ignored, and shallow metal lined convenience trays can be used. However, you must be sure that these are kept at least 1 inch away from the walls of the microwave oven. Note that foil lined cartons and deep metal pans, while they may not cause an electrical storm in the kitchen, are inappropriate as microwave cookware. They don't allow the microwaves to get through to the food inside.

Microwave cooking is often associated with plastic cookware. However, there are different grades of plastic that range from acceptable, to questionable, to those durable, 'engineered', heavy duty plastics that can actually damage the microwave oven. So not all plastics are created equal when it comes to being microwave oven correct. Nor are all glass containers necessarily safe.

Interesting to note that shallow, square cookware is best, in that round or high containers prevent the microwaves from reaching the food inside, due to that microwaves travel in a straight line.
